Classification of heart diseases in children:

Heart diseases in children can be divided into the following groups:

1. Congenital heart diseases in children:

Congenital heart diseases in children are-

i) Structural cardiac changes that are present at birth e.g.

  • Ventricular septal defect
  • Atrial septal defect
  • Tetralogy of Fallot
  • Coarctation of aorta
  • Patent ductus arteriosus
  • Pulmonary stenosis
  • Complete transposition of great arteries
  • Aortic stenosis.

ii) Genetic tendencies that lead to the changes developing after birth e.g. cardiomyopathy

2. Acquired heart diseases in children:

  • Rheumatoid heart disease
  • Auto-immune disorders
  • Cardiac infection
  • Metabolic disorders
  • Endocrine abnormalities
  • Tumors.
