History of the neonate:
History of the neonate includes-
I) Maternal and paternal medical and genetic history
II) Maternal past obstetric history
III) Maternal current antepartum and intrapartum obstetric history.
Maternal medical history:
Maternal medical history includes-
- Chronic illness
- Drugs taken during pregnancy
- Unusual dietary habits
- Social history
- History of child abuse
- Smoking history
- Occupational exposure to chemicals
- Infections of potential risk to the fetus.
Maternal genetic history:
History of genetic disease in family.
Maternal past obstetric history:
- Maternal age
- Gravidity
- Parity
- Blood grouping and Rh typing
- Past pregnancy results.
Maternal current antepartum and intrapartum obstetric history:
i) Findings of investigations during the current pregnancy- USG, amniocentesis, screening tests like rubella antibody, HBsAg, HIV
ii) Results of antepartum tests of fetal well-being like- biophysical profiles, doppler assessment of fetal blood flow patterns, nonstress tests
iii) Query about pregnancy-related maternal complications like UTI, pre-eclampsia, eclampsia, vaginal bleeding, preterm labor, gestational diabetes etc
iv) History about peripartum events like maternal fever, duration of ruptured membranes, fetal distress, meconium-stained amniotic fluid, type of delivery – NVD or C/S, reason for operative or forceps delivery, infant status at birth, resuscitative measures taken for the infant, APGAR scores, anesthesia and analgesia used.
