Causes of skin diseases

Causes of skin diseases are-

1. Infective diseases:

i) Bacterial infection:

a) Streptococcal-

1. Impetigo

2. Cellulitis

3. Erysipelas

b) Staphylococcal-

1. Boil or furuncle

2. Abscess

3. Carbuncle

4. Scalded skin syndrome

c) Mycobacterium-

1. Leprosy

2. Lupus vulgaris

ii) Viral infection:

a) Herpes simplex infection

b) Chicken pox

iii) Fungal infection:

a) Superficial infection –

1. Pityriasis versicolor

b) Cutaneous infection –

1. Candidiasis

2. Dermatophytosis

c) Subcutaneous infection –

1. Sporotrichosis

d) Deep infection –

1. Cryptococcosis

2. Histoplasmosis

iv) Parasitic infestation:

a) Scabies

b) Dermal leishmaniasis

c) Filariasis.

2. Non infective diseases:

i) Eczema:

a) Exogenous

1. Allergic contact dermatitis

2. Irritant contact dermatitis

b) Endogenous

1. Atopic dermatitis

2. Seborrhoeic dermatitis

ii) Lichenoid disease:

Lichen planus

iii) Papulosquamous disease:

a) Psoriasis

b) Pityriasis

iv) Metabolic:

i) In DM-Diabetic bullae, Diabetic foot, secondary infection

ii) Amyloidosis

v) Autoimmune diseases:

a) Blistering disease-

1. Perphigus vulgaris

2. Bullous pemphigoid

b) Connective tissue diseases-

1. SLE

2. Discoid lupus erythematosis

3. Scleroderma

vi) Deficiency diseases:

i) Pellagra – in niacin deficiency

ii) Scurvy – in vitamin C deficiency

vii) Endocrine diseases:

i) Addison’s disease

ii) Cushing’s syndrome

iii) Hyperthyroidism

iv) Hypothyroidism

viii) Pilosebaceous follicle disease:

i) Acne

ii) Rosacea

ix) Pigment disorders:

i) Hyperpigmentation – melanoma

ii) Hypopigmentation –  vitiligo, albinism

x) Neoplastic:

i) Benign-

1. Seborrhoeic keratosis

ii) Malignant-

1. Squamous cell carcinoma

2. Basal cell carcinoma.
