Ascites:

Definition:

Excess accumulation of free fluid in peritoneal cavity is known as ascites.

Causes of ascites:

Common causes of ascites are-

  • Chronic liver disease (CLD)
  • Nephrotic syndrome
  • CCF
  • Protein losing enteropathy (hypoalbuminemia).

Uncommon causes of ascites are-

  • Abdominal TB
  • Abdominal malignancy
  • Acute pancreatitis
  • Bacterial peritonitis.
